Thermal imaging is a powerful tool, but it's also a complex one. Interpreting IR data to diagnose a problem in a house can be a tricky business. Even with the in-depth and intensive training provided through HomeSafe Home Services, you may encounter a situation that you just can't figure out on your own. Fortunately, with HomeSafe, you won't have to. Problem: What is the cause of the dark spots in the ceiling (below left)?
In the picture above left, the potential buyer feared that the dark spots on the ceiling could be mold. Further investigation by HomeSafe's Peng Lee determined that an area of defective insulation (see IR picture above right), caused by rodent activity in the ceiling, had resulted in condensation during the cold winter months. So what caused the spots to turn so dark? Lee determined that the homeowner burned candles in that area, and the carbon particles from the candle rose to the ceiling, stuck to the area of moisture and created the black spots that appeared to be, but were not, mold. Lee's expertise and detective work helped save the deal. Whenever you're stumped, all you have to do is take photographs of the area of concern and either e-mail it to HomeSafe's corporate trainers or send the pictures to HomeSafe's network of IR home inspectors in more than 20 states nationwide. You will receive invaluable expert feedback that simply isn't offered by any other IR equipment vendor or inspection training company. Many of HomeSafe's inspectors have been utilizing IR in their inspections since 2003, giving them five or more years' experience in the field tackling and solving every type of problem!
